A New York penthouse formerly owned by acclaimed writer and director M. Night Shyamalan, who is responsible for hit files like “Signs” and “The Sixth Sense,” has just hit the market for $14.5 million. Shyamalan, who earned fame and fortune by writing and directing intricately woven suspense-thrillers that always delivered plot twists at the end, was likely very pleased with the outcome of this real estate story.
According to the Robb Report, Shyamalan originally bought the penthouse in New York’s posh Tribeca neighborhood in 2003 for $6.3 million. He held onto the property for nearly 10 years, then turned a tidy profit when he sold it for $9.5 million in 2012. The current owner, whose identity is hidden behind an LLC, paid $12.75 million for it in 2021.

The property itself sits in an antique building originally constructed in 1888. It features five bedrooms and four bathrooms spread out over two floors totaling 7,185 square feet. Other luxury trappings include:
- A private elevator
- Two outdoor terraces totaling over 2,000 square feet
- 13-foot ceilings
- Floor-to-ceiling windows
- Gourmet chef’s kitchen
- Three separate living rooms
The buyer will get all that, plus access to New York’s famed Tribeca district. For several decades, this Manhattan neighborhood has been synonymous with the city’s urban-chic culture. Tribeca gets its name from its geographic shape, which forms a Triangle Below Canal Street. Much of the area was originally farmland before being converted into an industrial and warehouse district in the early 20th century.

Tribeca hit the big time in 2002 when DeNiro co-founded and hosted the Tribeca Film Festival, which is now world-renowned.
By that time, it was full of art galleries, five-star restaurants, and trendy bars, but the annual film festival gave Tribeca international appeal as “the place to be” in New York City. This appeal may have attracted Shyamalan to the area in 2003 when he originally purchased the penthouse. Since then, Tribeca’s fame and real estate values have only increased, and its status as one of Manhattan’s most iconic neighborhoods is secured.
